C’est avec grande tristesse que nous avons appris le décès de Charly Washipabano, membre de notre conseil d’administration et figure iconique du hockey dans la Nation Crie et sa communauté de Chisasibi, dimanche soir. Il avait 41 ans.

Charly a joué un rôle central dans le développement du hockey à la Baie James ces dernières année, notamment comme titulaire-formateur, entraîneur de plusieurs équipes de hockey mineur et dans son travail quotidien de coordonnateur des programmes au sein de la Eeeyou Istchee sports and recreation association (EISRA), l’organisme qui régit les sports et loisirs sur l’ensemble du territoire cri.

Comme joueur, sa passion du hockey l’avait amené rapidement à s’exiler dans la région métropolitaine dès l’âge atome (M11) pour y porter les couleurs des Élites de la Rive-Nord dans le réseau AA de l’ancienne Ligue de développement du Montréal-Métropolitain, pendant plusieurs saisons. Il y a notamment eu Jason Pominville comme coéquipier.

À compter des rangs midget (M18), il a poursuivi son cheminement à Amos, partageant son temps entre les Forestiers midget AAA et les Comètes midget AA en 1997-1998, avant de définitivement se tailler un poste avec les Forestiers en 1998-1999. Dans la suite de son parcours, celui qui était notamment réputé pour son tir foudroyant et son coup de patin en puissance aura notamment évolué avec les Hawks du St.Anselm college (New Hampshire) dans le réseau universitaire américain de la NCAA.

Dans l'historique du hockey dans la Nation crie, il aura été un modèle à suivre pour de nombreux jeunes hockeyeurs de la Baie James après avoir lui-même marché dans les traces des Steve Cheechoo, Bryan Bearskin et Brant Blackned, entre autres.

À l’été 2022, Charly Washipabano avait vécu une semaine de rêve en recevant l’invitation des Canadiens de Montréal à agir comme entraîneur invité pour la tenue du camp estival de développement de la Sainte-Flanelle, avec notamment Juraj Slafkovski, qui venait tout juste d’être réclamé au premier rang du repêchage de la LNH, et Israel Mianscum, espoir professionnel #1 de la Nation crie en ce moment.

Depuis quelques saisons, Charly suivait assidûment le cheminement de son fils Zane avec les Bears de la Nation Crie. Ce dernier s’aligne cette saison avec les Forestiers M15 AAA dans la Ligue de hockey d’excellence du Québec. Une des dernières publications Facebook du paternel montrait sa fierté de voir son fiston compléter un truc du chapeau, dimanche matin à Mascouche. Un but marqué à l’image de Charly, d’un puissant tir des poignets.

«La grande famille de Hockey Abitibi-Témiscamingue est sous le choc et grandement attristée par cette nouvelle. De par son parcours depuis qu’il est tout jeune, Charly était un ambassadeur hors-pair et un bâtisseur du hockey dans la Nation crie», a commenté le président Christian Beaulé.

«Un gars jovial et un gars de famille qui était très attaché à ses racines. Bien avant son association avec Hockey Abitibi-Témiscamingue, dès que je le croisais à l’aréna, c’était inévitable qu’on se rencontrait pour échanger une généreuse poignée de mains et discuter. C’était un grand passionné de hockey. C’est une grande perte», ajoute pour sa part le directeur général de Hockey Abitibi-Témiscamingue, Marc Désilets.

À toute la famille, à la communauté de Chisasibi et à la communauté de hockey de la Nation crie, l'équipe de Hockey Abitibi-Témiscamingue offre ses plus sincères condoléances.

Charly Washipabano laisse dans le deuil sa compagne Lily, ses fils Zane et Maddox, ses parents Clifford et Dolorès, ses sœurs Catherine et Judy, son frère Paul, son beau-fils Norman et de nombreux proches.

It is with great sadness that we learned of the passing of Charly Washipabano, a member of our Board of Directors and an iconic figure in Cree Nation hockey world and his hometown of Chisasibi, on sunday evening. He was 41 years old.

Charly has played a central role in the development of hockey in James Bay in recent years, notably as a trainer for coaching clinics, coach of several minor hockey teams, and in his work as program coordinator for the Eeeyou Istchee sports and recreation association (EISRA), the organization that governs sports and recreation throughout the Cree Nation territory.

As a player, his passion for hockey quickly led him to exile himself to the montreal suburb at the atom age (U11), where he played for «Les Élites de la Rive-Nord» in the AA network of the former Montreal Metro development league for several seasons. His teammates included Jason Pominville.

Starting in the midget (U18) category, he continued his career in Amos, splitting his time between the midget AAA Forestiers and the midget AA Cometes in 1997-1998, before finally earning a regular spot with the Forestiers in 1998-1999. Later in his career, the player renowned for his blistering shot and powerful skating played for the St.Anselm college Hawks (New Hampshire) in the NCAA.

In the history of hockey in the Cree Nation, he has been a role model for many young James Bay hockey players, having himself followed in the footsteps of Steve Cheechoo, Bryan Bearskin and Brant Blackned, among others.

In the summer of 2022, Charly Washipabano had a dream week when he was invited by the Montreal Canadiens to act as guest coach for the Habs summer development camp, featuring Juraj Slafkovsky, who had just been drafted first overall in the NHL draft, and Israel Mianscum, the Cree Nation's current #1 professional prospect.

For the past few seasons, Charly has assiduously followed his son Zane's progress with the Cree Nation Bears. This season, Zane is lining up with the Forestiers U15 AAA in the Ligue de hockey d'excellence du Québec. One of the father's latest Facebook posts showed how proud he was to see his son complete a hat-trick sunday morning in Mascouche. A goal scored in the image of Charly, with a powerful wrist shot.

"The entire Hockey Abitibi-Témiscamingue family is saddened by this news. Very early in his journey, Charly has been an outstanding ambassador and a builder of hockey in the Cree Nation," commented president Christian Beaulé.

"A jovial guy and a family man who was very attached to his roots. Long before his association with Hockey Abitibi-Témiscamingue, whenever I ran into him at the arena, it was inevitable that we'd meet to exchange a generous handshake and chat. He was passionate about hockey. He will be deeply missed», adds Marc Désilets, executive director of Hockey Abitibi-Témiscamingue.

Charly Washipabano is survived by his beloved Lily, his sons Zane and Maddox, his parents Clifford and Dolorès, his sisters Catherine and Judy, his brother Paul, his stepson Norman, and many close relatives.
